I don't think the C64GS was started to get rid of C64 circuit boards. 
They were still manufacturing C64's because there was still demand. The 
consoles just happened to be a huge market. Some of the software houses 
said they'd support it with cartridges, commodore got a case built and 
they gave it a punt.

The ROM supposedly has a lot of functions in for text windows or other 
weird stuff like that which were never used by any games, because they 
wanted to be C64 compatible as well.

I was tempted to buy a GS when it died but I never saw them sold cheap 
enough, commdore took them back and turned them into 64's. I don't think 
they had a problem selling them then. FWIW I'd probably have done the 
same but left it in the GS case, with a separate keyboard.
