I didn't not search for NVRAM.  A quick search revealed many options
-- thanks a lot for the tip!  Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't I
need to find the same configuration (in this case 4096 x 8)?

I haven't come across the PETvet in my searches thus far -- I love it!
 I've decided to leave the original ROMs intact and go with the
PETvet.  It's quite an interesting device, very handy indeed.
