I agree that a DOS box would be overkill but it got me thinking - it wouldn't have to be big, and after a few seconds of googling I found a single-board-computer with DOS and a parallel port:

...and it could be useful for a lot more than just pretending to be a 1541, also I have to say that I find all this talk about the death of the vanishing parallel port to be more than just a little bit ironic - Commodore computers are vanishing even more quickly but it's not as if we're going to let that stop us!
