For a starter:

Paul Molitor, Jörg Ritter. "VHDL: Eine Einführung" Pearson Studium,
Munich 2004. ISBN 9783-8273-7047-1

It is in German only (fortunately for some, unfortunately for some
others). While in general, I do not recommend German books, I find this
a good tutorial.
