Thanks for all the modem advice. I've added the 24pin userport connector
back to this device (someone had removed it earlier in its life) and will
have a go at dialing out!

Hi Nick,
 
You shouldn't have any problems. The Australian phone system is pretty close
to the US system, the only difference is in the frequency of dial tone and
engaged tone signals which can cause some US modems not to detect those
signals here. Other differences were Telecom/Telstra used to require more
stringent phone line 
isolation that often meant equipment had to be modified by importers and
submitted for approval, don't know if they still do.
 
Anyway, you won't cause any exchange meltdowns :)

Hi All, 

I've received a few of these and before plugging into the Australian
telephone system - and having Telstra issue me a bill for $$$$ damages - I
was wondering how universal these modems were. Was the modem different for
different markets? The ones I have came from the USA.
