Does someone on this list have knowledge of Japanese character sets?  
It'd be interesting to see whether the Japanese (Kanji?) character set of
the VIC-1001 is complete, or if some characters are missing.  For
comparison, you could use e.g. the 5 by 7 pixel character set of the
Hitachi HD44780 LCD controller, which has some Kanji characters in the
codes 128..255.
