Instead of directly counting up or down I would recommend something like a binary search, like
first searching sector 256. If it works, go up to 512 if not, down to 128. Repeat this until you have
an upper and a lower bound. Remember the interval
in which the sector number is, e.g. ]128,256]. Now half the interval by checking 192 to get a new
interval with upper and lower bound. This reduces the number of checks to go approx. logarithmically
with the maximum number of sectors on the track.
