I thought I also had something for exactly checking file presence but I don't seem to be able to find it in my lib. In general though the process should be like (from protein-based memory)

- try to open the file for reading
- check for success/failure
- close the file

You don't need to load or even read anything from the file.

It's a sequence of SETLFS, SETNAM, OPEN calls.
