A 6502 emulating a VIC-II (sort of)

This is not the same I asked sometime ago -- I think ;)

The inner workings of the VIC-II are well known. Can a 6502 be programmed to do "the same" but not "emulate" as the VIC-II (or any other video chip) does?

A sort of "video renderer", where the final DAC part is left to a circuit -- or not.

But there would be also fast graphics routines that would be executed by that 6502 and not the main one, because that graphics 6502 would run several times faster than the main CPU. The VIC-II actually run at ~8MHz, didn't it?

This was what the ATARI VCS did, wasn't it?
