But, again, KERNAL changes.  You can also use JiffyDOS (not trying to 
plug it, just using it as a quick example) to get the same speeds 
without a wire mod and works with 1541 (though, the OP looks to put a 
1581 in the unit, which makes sense).

I posit there is no way to speed up the 64 to drive transfer speed that 
is 100% transparent to the KERNAL and will maintain 100% compatibility.  
Therefore, every transfer speed up will require trading off some 
compatibility.
