Not sure what you mean but "real RAM underneath" is accessible for CPU w/o problems. I remember using it as "undo buffer" f. e. in Multidrawer PRG. As for colour RAM, disabling it and using "real RAM underneath", even if it would be possible by changing PLA's equations, doesn't count as "better" in my books. For example it would break its above mentioned usage and effectively decrease system memory by 1/half KiB. Luckily VIC's access to colour RAM does not depend on PLA ;-)
