Cbm-hackers has never had an expectation of privacy, and the identifiers that would nominally be considered sensitive have always been public (names, email address, IP addresses from headers), and users by virtue of using it broadcast that information to all other users everywhere.

I desperately do not want to post something that devolves into political
discourse into this technical list, but I do find it of note that the
world tends to have reservations about the US and it's "wild west
attitude" about, well, everything, but that same lawlessness often comes
in handy, for things like this.  I know that doesn't justify the
position.  I would say "of note" should be read more like "well, honey,
I put off fixing the gutters all this time, and now we're selling the
house, and the buyers don't care, so I just saved us some money :-)".
My wife would cringe (and she has, as I've used very similar
justifications in the past as we've sold homes), but reminding me that
the gutter leak might have hurt the foundation is a lost cause at that
point.

I will quickly add, that, as a cybersecurity resource, I am not
dismissing the value of GDPR.  Obviously, it was not designed to cover
corner cases like these forums and IRC. And, one can lament that the US
has not taken strong enough stances on protecting citizen's privacy.  It
is, though, interesting how things play out.

In any event, it sounds like there is ample opportunity to use our lack
of privacy framework to aid in the list's continued value.  I am
strongly in favor of the list being archived, even if the effort is not
trivial, and will monetarily support the goal if needed.  I don't often
use the nabble archive, but I am so glad it is there when I do need it,
and I would hate for it not to be continued in some form.
