The cbm6400 ROMs on Zimmers (http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/firmware/printers/6400/index.html) actually look a bit like what you describe. According the the PET FAQ (http://www.zimmers.net/cbmpics/cbm/PETx/petfaq.html), the 6400 printer used a Tec F-10 mechanism.
