Since the V6 is cheaper and faster, I’m not sure why the earlier versions other than the format-constrained PowerBook one would be a better choice?

For Terry... Compared to the Seagate Hawk, the "pin 1" of the SCSI2SD is on the opposite side of the device so you have to twist the cable or mount the SCSI2SD upside down.
