same here, any cheap (even old-ish) TV can display NTSC just fine (in Italy).

that's because when you make a PAL decoder, NTSC comes for free (no
added components if you use
a multi-standard decoder IC), instead, if you make an NTSC decoder and
you don't really need PAL, you
can save on a few components, like for example the delay line (unless
now they can make the delay
in the digital domain inside the IC).
