It was fancied about 40 years ago, e.g. in the Elektor magazine, when 
also the SN76477 was hot.

Takes some effort to build a proper synthesizer oscillator from it (or 
its cousin, the XR/ICL8038), as it wasn't exactly developed for being 
tunable over several octaves.

C64 users may remember the 2206/2211 combo from early packet radio 
interfaces, before single-chip solutions like the TCM3101/05 or 
AM7910/11 got fashionable.
