Your suggestion 0.101 (base 2) would be 2^-1 + 2^-3 = 0.5 + 0.125 = 0.625.

See: 0.5 = 5*10^-1.  You could also have converted it to binary by
computing 5 / 10^1, or 101 / 1010 in binary.  That gives 0.1 in binary.
