VDC RAM Refresh

Hi all,
does anyone know what refresh cycle the VDC runs? Obviously it must count
at least through bits A0-A7 as it can refresh 4464 RAMs as well as 4416, but
is that it? Or does another chip handle the refresh? It would be nice if it
was capable of more!

If not, has anyone tried a 256kB expansion using 8x 41256 chips? I've come
across a RAMdisk utilitiy which uses the VDC on a C128-in-C64 mode, but
figure it would only be of true use if it was at least 256kB in size. Would
also help the likes of Maverick etc for disk copying.

Regards,
- Nick
