Someone posted a disassembly from the demo Mathematica by Reflex which autodetects the SID type. IIRC, this works by monitoring a waveform, but I don't know about the details. There might be another possibility to distinguish the two SID types, but at least on one of my 8580 SIDs it doesn't work too well.
