The inserts afaik only happens when you actually do an insert, i.e.
type the INS key or print an INS char. Otherwise the link might be set
but the lower part of the screen isn't scrolled downwards.

Btw on the C128 you can have up to 160 char long logical lines. Don't
know where it stores the link table(s) and don't know if it has
separate for the 40 col and 80 col screens or not.

Btw printing an INS char at the upper right corner and then using a
poke to delete the link in the link table were a classic trick to write
downwards scrolling games in basic, like "first person" car race /
skiing style games.
