The "standard square cut pin" aka "goldpin" type of headers are not suitable indeed. They will work to a degree in some sockets but the socket will degrade. And they don't fit at all into "precision" sockets.

The round, machined pins are OK. They work best with appropriate mating sockets ("precision" ones) but are also suitable for "regular sockets.

It depends on the application. If I want a riser (DolphinDOS 2, VASYL) I use "goldpin" square ones into appropriate mating female headers

They have flat pins on the bottom and sit perfectly in IC sockets. If want connection as low as possible I use round pins. Preferably fitting into "precision" sockets but also for "regular" (use in my ROM replacements and DolphinDOS 1541-II for example).
