Then what about adding (read: piggybacking) a 6526 to a 1541 in the 
same way?

The CS signal can come from a free output pin of the 74LS42. The 
software is maybe another problem. If there is not enough room for 
the burst routines, there are two options:
- Replace existing routines by the burst routines. The only 
consequence is that this 1541 can only used with a converted C64 (or 
C128 ???).
- Add extra ROM in one or another way.
