In hindsight, it would had been better to make a new drive for the C64,
but that assumes Commodore predicting that the C64 would sell much much
more than the VIC 20 did. Somewhere I read that the VIC-20 sold in
about 5M units, while the C64 about 13M units (and 5M C128), which
would make it not that sensible to make the 1541 to not be VIC-20
compatible as it were an upgrade path that I think quite a few persons
took.

If you would only use IEC devices, you could use the IEEE port as an
user port :)
