Yes, PETs were the most common Commodore lab computer in grade schools in the US. We had a typing lab with a shared floppy drive and sounds like the one you mentioned. 

I don’t think the Classroom name would have stuck with this one. It was just intended to be cheaper without the drive (say use your existing 1541 or clone), not actually for schools. Maybe they would have been the C65-SX and C65-DX eventually.
