What is needed in the 6526 besides the standard I/O ports?

If it's only the I/O ports that's needed, a 6522 would probably work
fine. The interrupt handling might cause problems though, worth
investigating.

The nice thing about 6522 is that it's afaik still manufactured, or at
least available new at for example Unicorn Electronics. (Still
expensive to ship from the US to Europe though, but still).
