My first assumption is that they are to replace the 6526. If so, then I would prefer two Z80 PIOs instead because they are easier to interface with the 8088.

It sounds be simpler but my first impression is that the ICs occupy more space than two PIOs.


Michał already mentioned plan B: a CPLD replacing BOTH the 6526 and 6525. It will occupy even less space than the original ICs. A plus for using the CPLD: we have some pins left for an interface for a SC card.
