Technically CF is 16 bit, although some cards support switching to 8 bit 
transfers. I don't know how well that works in practise.

The XTIDE adapters work round it by using a buffer for the other 8 bits, 
converting that hardware to a PET should be pretty easy & any parallel 
ATA (or technically a SATA with an adapter) will work.

You might want to get it working with PIO before trying DMA, because 
that is a whole new world of pain.
