I the strength of the PLC TIB drive is that the firmware implements read/write of the FAT file system, making disk interchange much easier. I think it would be cool to adapt this to a CF, or other flash card format. The firmware is 6 to 8K so it'll be a challenge, but I think it would be worth it to disassemble the firmware (on my todo list). After that it might be fairly easy to adapt.
I think I have a pcb for 1541ide which I never used because of lack of software support.

Hallo Mia,

> No, both a CF card and a FDC shows up as a few 8-bit registers, ....

Oops, it seems I mixed up FDC and FDD. Connecting an IDE HDD (and thus doable for a CF card as well) has been done before. Most well-known is the Czech IDE64. Because of this device I developed my own IDE card for the C64: http://baltissen.org/newhtm/c64ide.htm . From this came a 16-bits version for the 1541. And when I started to get "big" HDDs for free where "big" means larger than 2 GB, I developed a 8-bits version: http://baltissen.org/newhtm/1541ide8.htm . If you omit the buffers and use a CF card, you only need one IC. I momentary use it with a 128 MB CF card.
Just FYI: I don't use a FS like FATxx or so, the HDD/CF is filled with D64s in a row plus a kind of directory at the start.
