I haven't tried the ZF yet although I have bought it a while ago... (and 
yes Jim your work is very much appreciated!). It's still on my todo list to 
port XD2031 onto the ZF. And this is the beauty of broadly used devices. It 
attracts more people to build around it!
(Is IEEE ATN on a pin that allows interrupts?)

But back to the 2031 problem, IIRC I had no problems running my XD2031 
firmware tests with all IEEE drives _but_ the 2031 in VICE. That were a lot 
of factors - emulation, my test cases etc but my preliminary conclusion was 
to actually decide there is some difference in the 2031 that breaks the 
usual drive-related code. IIRC it was doubted here and I understand it, I 
would have doubted this conclusion from someone else either I guess. Due to 
time constraints I decided not to investigate further, just see this 
discussion ringing a bell here
