Grounding the audio input was usually used to nullify the crosstalk coming through that "floating" input but it might have had other uses I don't remember now.

It became less important today as different (better) methods for sample playback had to be invented. Specifically such that do not depend on the presence of the 6581 with its audio volume click bug. Back then it was a real deal breaker for many people.
