yes, I thougth also that it should be capable of reading its own tapes.
I think (by analyzing the audio written on a tape) that the write
circuit could have
issues. It reads fine the tapes written on other drives.
I'll try changing the hex inverter chip.

sure sure, I would never start troubleshooting a tape drive (or even
disk drive) without first cleaning them
very well :)
