Sorry for being captain obvious, but maybe it would be a good idea to
try this out in VICE as you can switch ROM images and RAM sizes
separately, so it's easier to find out exactly what is the culprit.

Could it be that a better monitor for the newer PET roms depend on some
routines in the buildt in TIM?

B.t.w. I really don't understand why a better monitor didn't fit in 4k.
VIC-MON is only 4k and has A/D.
