It's probably because it - kind of - shrinks with age.

I thought of that too but first needed to devise a method to widen the hole precisely, some microns... also, it is probably risky in the sense that it might "stick" before you move it into correct position. Alternatively I thought of heating the gear up (in oil?) so that it expands enough to be placed on the axis and it would then contract and "mount itself" firmly. Haven't tried any of those approaches though.
