This is probably not relevant for any disk drives, but anyway:

Atleast in some Philips reel-to-reel recorders from the 60's they used
belts that had a cross section with three or five corners. The reason
is that it both has to fit into the cutting in a wheel and also roll
against a flat drive wheel or something similar, and using the wrong
kind of belt will quickly wear out a rubber wheel. Smart at the time,
problematic nowdays.

Don't know if any disk drive uses something similar.
