I had a box of tapes in the 1980's that disagree.

The first game I copied was airwolf (novaload) which I did with two 
separate tape desks hooked up with the mic and ear connectors. Neither 
of them were what you could class high quality. The loading time was way 
off on that copy, so the music cuts off at the wrong place.

There were some copy protections that relied on automatic gain 
corrupting the signal (a bit like macrovision on VHS) but I got over 
that using high speed mode on my sisters dual cassette boombox.
