IIRC:

Yes, for example in the (1541 oriented) book "Inside Commodore DOS".

IIRC there is a difference in timing from having read one sector to
writing the next sector.

If you format and rewrite a whole track the disk is still readable in
both drives, but then you have a disk that cannot easily be written in
either drive.

I'm not sure which drives falls into each group, only that there are
differences and the drives fall into two groups (afaik).
