Yes.  I haven't tried it yet, but the latest firmware is supposed to
support them.

Also true.  I do a lot of fiddling with mine on an 8032.  I do recall
once knowing either the CBM Wedge code or the 1541 drive firmware
about how LOAD "$",8 was different than OPEN "$",8, but I've forgotten
what the specific difference is.  I'm pretty sure that's what's
happening here.  I spent a little time reviewing BASIC 4.0
disassemblies and how CATALOG works, but I didn't dig deep enough to
get an answer.

It works for some basic stuff I do, but I also have a 2031 that I use
much more often.
