Especially sind VIC didn't produce Composite but S-Video (Y/C) instead. 
Done right, that produces a very good picture as you can see when you 
replace the modulator in a C64 with a circuit that just amplifies the 
video signals.

Also, VIC needed different versions for PAL and NTSC, yes, but they 
fixed that with TED, the 7360/8360 can be switched between NTSC and PAL. 
Of course, then you need different KERNAL ROMs...
