Indeed, they require lots of board space. The original design might seem
kind of brutal but it has been working for decades so I don't see a
strong requirement to change it now.

My PCB manufacturer produces the boards in quantities of tens but 10
boards is way more than I need so I'd be willing to sell the surplus boards.

board for free.
