Yes, but the add-on hardware to disable the strange banking should be
integrated into any new product.

It seems like new homebrew hardware for Atari 8-bit is far more
expensive than for Commodore 8-bit. SIO2SD seems to be far more
expensive than SD2IEC even though they do kind of the same job.

But from the Liber809 blog you could atleast get a sense of how it's
made.

Especially this blog post has a picture of a prototype which could be
possible to copy.

Maybe the Liber809 is a dead end.
