For those of you that prefer a GUI... In my CBM-Transfer you can click on the area where the drive type is displayed (ie: 8250) and get the option to set the drive to single-sided mode.

this works great.

I know the basic-"hack" to turn the drive in single sided mode.
But I didn't thought to use this with opencbm ;)
