They may also have been playing chicken as the engineers wanted to use a 
parallel cable anyway.

I'm not sure there were any other IEC peripherals at the time, however 
if a printer had a 6522 then it would also drop bits as that too is 
inbound traffic. Loading and saving on a disk drive should also be affected.
