Patents also do > not matter. I'm not a lawyer, but I suspect you're right that a picture of a circuit can't violate the patent that describes the circuit. It only comes into play with something functional (a software emulator may violate patents). Decapping and reverse engineering for your own purposes is fine, uploading to the internet not so much. But the mask rights in the US have expired. No idea about EU, but really I can't see that anybody who owns the rights will actually care.
