I never checked myself exactly how they achieved that but I /think/ they do it by changing the art and timing of the head movement signals. That was simple. They moved the head always outwards. Of course this only worked on drives with that stopped the stepper on Track 0, but most of them were. On a drive that still tried to step, this hack didn't work.
