Do you own an ohm meter? Check the cable. Not only are there different
configurations for the appletalk cable, but sometimes the wires are broken
internally, usually near the connector.

In making your own cable there are a number of thing to consider.

1. Cables are usually twisted pair. The signal wire and its return are
twisted together. This tends to cnncel out external interference. If your
use of the cable has a different pinout, the cancellation may not occur.

2. Rule of thumb: If you double the length of the cable, the guage of the
wire should decrease by 2. (If the original cable was 28 guage, a cable
twice that length should be 26 guage.)

3. A longer cable may need to be shielded, even if the original cable was
not.

4. Significantly longer cables may need to be low capacitance.
