Update: I connected the actual floppy drive to the cable and it still
does not work. Even with a 30 cm cable disk reads are extremely flaky,
from both the internal and external drive. So it is not a problem of
termination, and the fact that it exhibits itself on both drives means
that it's not a problem of the drive either. I suspect now two things:
(a) the disk controller in the C65 is broken (which would be strange
since it works on Bo's C65) or (b) maybe I did something wrong when
soldering the DIN8 connector. I think I need to open the computer again
and resolder the connector to see if it changes anything.

Michau.
