I still use Eagle because I'm on Linux all the time and it was
available years ago, so I've done fistfuls of designs on it.  I've
been eyeing Kicad because it does seem to have caught up in a lot of
ways.

So not exactly an endorsement, but I'm also considering what you are
considering, because I love Open Source, and on the plus side, I don't
have a full Eagle license to hold me back.
