Yes, but '+' worked fine, for example:  lda #CONSTANT+2. And to be honest, I hardly use constants. If I use them, it is because my source was based on sources created by others using them. A good example is the Lee Davison source. 
If I have to set a bit then in most cases I use "lda #$xx  ; what does xx mean".
