I can see that variations on the exact measurements of the gear could affect adjacent gears, but if we could come up with a part that could make countless, at the moment non-working, plotters working, I'd say it's worth it. I can't see anyone seriously using these plotter _so much_ that it would worn off other gears :)

That info about the pens looks very promising! Has anyone here tried to contact and/or order those?

I found a german page about the Atari 1020 plotter, and there are measurements of the gears:

There is even a reference to a part number EA-055-13 that is supposed to be some kind of a suitable replacement, eventhough all I find are metal parts like this:
