Time zones didn't really change anything for people though. They just had to 
cope with midday changing from the sun being directly overhead, to a 
generally imperceptible offset depending on where they are in the time zone.

I'm not sure those are particularly good examples. If those governments tell 
you to do something, you do it even if it makes no sense & you don't dare 
tell anyone that you think the government made a mistake.

15% of the population of crimea voted to become part of russia and it 
happened. 70% of the people didn't vote and 15% voted against becoming part 
of russia.
